SEEN meeting 26th June 2025, hosted at Sholing Valleys Study Centre
Blackbird Environmental
Led by Rick Page & Steve Bowles
Rick & Steve soft-launched Blackbird Environmental, which provides funding and support for small scale projects for Southampton schools to encourage a connection with nature. Their introduction included evidence that time outdoors positively impacts the mental and physical health of children.
Free the Kids – Dirt is Good . A thought-provoking short film. Worth a watch!
Previous school green space projects were discussed, and evidence to show a lasting legacy in changing the culture of schools though green space access. Your project however small could positively impact year groups for years to come!
Discussion included looking at the options for enhancements to existing green spaces, such as a pontoon for a pond or building and installing bird boxes or creating raised beds where there is limited green space. Matched funding for blue spaces was also discussed with Amy from the Blue Influencer Scheme for projects that fit with the scheme’s objectives.
If you would like to apply for funding for your school please read the Blackbird Environmental Rationale.
Blue Influencers Scheme
Led by Amy Ellis, Blue Mentor and Youth Engagement Officer for Wessex River Trust
Amy talked about the Blue Influencers Scheme which has included a range of youth led pond and river projects both short and long-term, to improve the environment of schools, neighbourhoods and communities. See below for slides and short films.

Beat the Heat
Led by Rebecca King
Rebecca spoke about the emerging Heatwaves and Health community project in Southampton. Attendees discussed which questions could be asked of children and young people to encourage participation: How will the rising heat affect me and other people? How will it affect the natural world? How are animals going to get cool in the sun? How is nature staying cool? How can I make a difference?
Suggestions for engaging children were offered including assemblies, practical activities and games. Curriculum based topics and experiments were discussed including heat absorption, energy transference and insulation and how this relates to trees, green spaces, or the melting of ice. Inclusion and linking SENCOs was also discussed.
Sholing Valleys Study Centre
Thanks to Mac from Sholing Valleys Study Centre for leading the pond dipping session at Miller’s pond. We had positive feedback about how well it was being used by the local community, in particular young people out enjoying some time in nature. Sholing Valleys hosts events throughout the year for people of all ages.
