SEEN meeting 6th March 2025, hosted at the University of Southampton
Sustainability Support for Education
Sean Phelan, Senior Product Manager, TPX
Sustainability Support for Education is a free online service, commissioned by the Department for Education, that supports you to progress your Climate Action Plan. It helps you to identify the strategic next steps that are right for your setting based on your setting type, what you’ve already done and the time and resources you have available. It then navigates you to trusted resources that will support you to take those steps.

The Green Stories project
Denise Baden, Professor of Sustainable Practice, University of Southampton
Denise is launching a new novel which sets out a roadmap to a sustainable future in fiction form. There’s an associated crowdfunder raising money for a new Green Stories writing competition running until the end of March. Denise has also launched a new LinkedIn newsletter Creative Climate Solutions that share what has been learned from her research and many projects.
Research based on feedback from readers of the rom-com Habitat Man set in Southampton reveals that fiction aimed at mainstream audiences can inspire more sustainable practices.
Bird Aware Solent
Anthony Knox, Ranger
Anthony Knox works as a ranger for a Partnership organisation called Bird Aware Solent. His talk at the SEEN meeting was about their new and developing outreach education programme – what they have done so far and where it might go in the future.
Migrant birds all make incredible journeys across sea and land, escaping hostile winter conditions, to overwinter in our region seeking safety and a plentiful source of food. Bird Aware Solent would love to tell young people their stories and what they can do to help them thrive while they are here with us and to promote the understanding of stewardship and care for our environment. They are offering free talks, lessons, and outdoor learning sessions to under 18’s, in the subject areas of Science, Geography, English, Art and Citizenship.
If you would like a free school visit or would like to take a group out to see the birds on the coast, please email Anthony to arrange a visit Anthony.Knox2@hants.gov.uk.
