Dr Athina Thoma and Dr Charis VoutsinaĀ from MaSE attended and presented their work at the 14th Congress of the European Society for Research in Mathematics Education (CERME 14) in Bolzano, Italy. The Congress is structured around Thematic Working Groups (TWGs), each focusing on specific areas within mathematics education research. These TWGs cover a broad spectrum of topics, reflecting the diverse interests and emerging trends in the field.
CERME is a working conference where researchers submit their papers or posters in advance, which then undergo a round of peer review before being presented at the conference. The conference itself prioritizes in-depth discussions of each paper, with participants expected to have read all the contributions within their group beforehand and are assigned papers to react to. These discussions not only delve into individual papers but also explore overarching themes and consider future directions for the research community.
MaSEās Contributions at CERME 14:
-
Athina Thoma presented her work with Paola Iannone (University of Edinburgh) on “āThe goal is really to have a correct proof that you can also verify in Leanā ā Exploring a lecturerās perspective of using Lean in teaching”
-
Ben Davies, although not physically present at the conference, shared his work with Paola Iannone & George Kinnear (University of Edinburgh), Irene Biza (University of East Anglia), and Juuso NieminenĀ (University of Hong Kong) onĀ “Towards a research agenda for generative AI in university mathematics education”
-
Charis Voutsina presented her work with Lois George (University of the West Indies) and Stephanie Flack (University of Southampton) on “Opportunities for learning in parent-child discussions about written numbers in everyday life“
Additionally, both Charis and Athina were co-leaders of Thematic Working Groups:Ā TWG13: Early Years MathematicsĀ andĀ TWG14: University Mathematics Education, respectively. The work of the conference is still ongoing, as we are now in the process of re-reviewing submissions within the respective TWGs ahead of publication in the proceedings.
