  • New technologies
  • CPD conference
  • 24 March 2017
  • 9:30 – 10:45
    11:15 – 12:30
    13:30 – 14:45
  • Contents
  • Practical use of new technologies in the secondary classroom to enhance learning
  • Some principles and underlying research
  • Examples of technology

–Not exhaustive

–Always stay critical

–I will ask you to think about technology use while demonstrating technology

  • Who am I
  • Dr. Christian Bokhove
  • From 1998-2012 teacher maths, computer science, head of ICT secondary school Netherlands
  • PhD ‘Use of ICT for acquiring, practicing and
    assessing algebraic expertise’ with
Prof. Van Maanen and Prof. Drijvers
  • Since 2012 Lecturer at University of
    Southampton

–Maths education

–Technology use

–Large-scale assessment

  • There is a lot to do with technology
  • OECD report
  • Ma overview
  • General about technology
  • Effectiveness varies wildly
  • Engagement varies wildly
  • So we must be critical about what we use technology for
  • This means you need to make informed decisions based on

–What you want to achieve

–What technology can and can’t do

–The logistics

  • Ways to look at technology
  • Learning objects (Kay & Knaak, 2008)

Learning objects that have good interactivity, clear design, high engagement, easy to use features, and high quality multimedia are most likely to lead to higher teacher and student satisfaction, as well as increased student performance.

  • Related research
  • Research on interactive learning environments
  • Multimedia learning
  • Instructional design
  • Functions of software
  • Instruction and presentation
  • Interaction (Beauchamp and Kennewell, 2008)

–The object of the interaction: resources to interact with, where the teacher provides the structure for the interaction e.g.  a video clip shown on an IWB

–A participant in interaction: a partner to interact with where the ICT provides the structure for interactions e.g. a quiz

–A tool for interaction: a mechanism to act through where learners are provided with the medium to interact through (email, chat, mind mapping)

  • Collaboration
  • Logistics…what I tried to do
  • App or web-based

–E.g. used to show iMovie but this requires an Apple device

–Mix of software: might not cover all

–More to show what is possible. As software changes….opportunities change

  • If web-based HTML5 or plugin needed?
  • Most tools have free versions, sometimes ‘pro’ gives more features (but I’m not a salesman)
  • Always a ‘technology disclaimer’

I have put some key links on a webpage.

To make the original URL
http://blog.soton.ac.uk/mshe/cpd-conference/
a bit shorter I often use an URL shortener.

For example http://is.gd

You can now use http://is.gd/cpduos

  • Socrative (Quiz and poll)
  • I will log in as Teacher
  • You please (in a moment) log in as Student
  • Ready made question banks
  • My ‘room’ is 1324
  • Socrative

Short answer:

“What are the biggest advantages of using technology in the classroom?”

Short answer:

“What are the biggest barriers in using technology in the classroom”

–You can add multimedia if you want

  • Padlet is more for a ‘collage’
  • You can also collaboratively work on documents, spreadsheets, presentations
  • Google forms
  • If you want to know more about that, see end
  • Blippar (augmented reality)
  • On tablet…
  • Classkick (classroom)
  • Show teacher
    interface
  • Make assignment

–Blank

–Existing file

–There are sample assignments: let’s try the student tutorial and the teacher tutorial

  • Add roster
  • Go to www.classkick.com EYZ KES
  • Nearpod (guided teaching)
  • Combines presentation and interactive features
  • Easier to control all screens of the students, but harder to ‘break out of’.
  • Nearpod
  • www.nearpod.com FSNDO
  • Educreations (record)
  • But you can also use Youtube…
  • Youtube editor (video)
  • Edit videos
  • Automatic captions and translations
  • Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A3gZmLHPvRM
  • As a community…
  • Social media

–Twitter: @cbokhove

–I often use Tweetdeck to manage my twitter feeds
http://tweetdeck.twitter.com

  • Podcasts, for example the Edfiles

http://theedfiles.libsyn.com/

  • Vidcasts
  • Blogs
  • Go to www.wordpress.com
  • You can start your own blog
  • Different layouts

–Project blogs

–Personal blog

–There also are subject specific ‘echo chambers’

  • Blog: echo chamber
  • Subject specific
  • This of course is hard to demo, as this differs per subject
  • There are many websites with ready-made resources (e.g. subject organisations, TES)
  • Subject blogs
  • Other developments
  • Streaming video

–Youtube, livestream

  • Gamification

–Times tables rockstars

  • Comparative judgement
  • Mindmapping
  • Digital, interactive books
  • Any requests? (socrative)

  • Conclusion
  • Technology is not a ‘silver bullet’
  • But it can support teaching and learning
  • There are different functions from ‘drill and thrill’ and interaction to collaborative tools
  • The landscape changes all the time
  • Start with small steps an find out what works for you
