On 22nd November 2024, we had the opportunity to share and reflect on the work completed during the COSMOS final conference, that took place in Utrecht, hosted by the project coordinators at Utrecht University. The COSMOS final conference brought together project partners, teacher participants, school leaders, and science education researchers to discuss how open schooling can be achieved through science education, and how schools can become hubs for community well-being. Southampton Education School had a strong presence with Dr Andri Christodoulou, Sam Weston, Dr Ran Peleg and two of our doctoral researchers, Aprillyana Utami and Jingwen Song.
It was a great pleasure to be able to attend the conference with four of the teachers we have worked with closely during the project, who had the opportunity to share their experiences and work with teachers and researchers across Europe. Mrs Gemma Hortop, science teacher from Hounsdown school led with great success a workshop, along with Andri and Sam, on how to encourage student participation in socioscientific inquiry-based learning drawing on strategies she implemented with her class on the issue of vaping. Andri also moderated the panel discussion reflecting on the COSMOS approach and ways forward.
