Escape rooms are a popular game genre that has hit high streets all over the UK and the world. In the game a group of players needs to complete a number of puzzles to succeed in a mission and/or escape a locked room. Escape rooms have a huge educational potential as a tool to increase internal motivation to learn, promote group work and apply scientific knowledge to different contexts.

Dr. Ran Peleg, one of the pioneers of educational escape rooms, has recently joined MSHE at the Southampton Education School. He ran one of his mobile escape room kits at the School’s research seminar and discussed relevant theories and research.

Ran has created educational escape rooms for schools, museums and science centres on a multitude of topics including Chemistry, Genetics, Conservation, Physics and even Financial Education. His work also includes learning science through drama, theatre and storytelling.
