A new Open Access paper was published by Dr Charis Voutsina in the Canadian Journal of Science, Mathematics and Technology Education.

The paper examines qualitative differences between equations of similar syntax in mathematics textbooks and provides a nuanced determination of contextual and structural aspects of ‘variation’ in how the equal sign is presented in elementary mathematics.
