tab1Our research centre is involved in the European MC Squared project.

The MC Squared project (www.mc2-project.eu ) is developing a software platform to foster Creative Mathematical Thinking among students and teachers, and to provide creative industries, involved in the production of multimedia content for educational purposes, with new solutions.

MC Squared is a three-year project, started the 1st October 2013 and funded by the European Union through the Seventh Framework Programme in the field of creativity ICT.

Creative Mathematical Thinking is a central aim of the European Union by being connected to personal and social empowerment for citizens for personal development and social integration, as an element capable of triggering innovation and change. However, the use of digital media for the enhancement of Creative Mathematical Thinking continues to be very marginal both in the education systems and in the industry.

The technology developed in the MC Squared project intends to provide a digital tool specifically designed to stimulate such skills.

Main outcome of the project is the development of a new technology: the “c-book” (“c” stands for Creativity), an innovative digital medium, which extends e-book technologies.

The c-books – designed accordingly to the principles of Constructionist learning theory – enable the authoring of interactive pages that include diverse ‘widgets’ (dynamic, exploratory or constructionist digital tools designed to foster creativity in students’ mathematical expression, investigation and meaning generation). An authorable learning analytics engine and a graphical interface will allow customizing the information and support provided to teachers and students by the widgets.

tab2Four different Communities of Interest (CoI) from England, France, Spain and Greece are involved in designing the c-books. Each CoI consists of an interdisciplinary working group involving publishers, developers of digital media, researchers and school educators.

The c-books are currently available in six languages (English, French, Spanish, German, Dutch and Greek).

Users can try the c-books by registering at: mc2dme.appspot.com/mcs/

The project is coordinated by the Computer Technology Institute & Press “Diophantus” and relies on the cooperation of 10 partners, two associated partners and one collaborator coming from seven different European countries (Greece, Holland, Germany, Italy, France, Spain and UK).
